Good Things...

Aloe Blacc is killing it with this record. Very soulful and well produced. No play-play. This is serious.

This is insanely good. Listen to the entire album on NPR here

For those who do not know who he is... maybe this will refresh your memory.

Bonus: Some of my favorite goodies.

This can't be happening.

How Leading Republicans (Boehner, Steele & McConnell) Party: With Black People Dressed As Slaves

I wish I could say I was shocked. I'll admit I did vomit a little in my mouth when I saw this over at FITSNews via Elon James White's Facebook page. Then my eyes crossed and I passed out from sheer outrage. I'm ok now though and am channeling my uh, concern into this here blog post. I swear to God this election season is going to give me some kinda tiny blood clot in my brain. If you were wondering why Republicans have initiated such a strong Block Barack program even when he promotes their own ideas as policies…well, look no further.

This is from The National Federation of Republican Women (NFRW) conference last weekend. They called this event: "A Southern Experience" and um…in some bizarre fetish fantasy world, perhaps it is. In the photo above, S.C. Senate President Glenn McConnell flanked by some fake slaves. However, this is 2010 not 1810 nor even 1910. This "Southern Experience" doesn't exist anymore and I don't really know where they found black people willing to dress like slaves and coon it up for the nice, paying white GOP politicos, donors, big wigs and fat cats. I suppose it must be desperate times. But no matter how desperate, I want these guys' names — they are the very definition of race traitors.

It's tempting to chalk this up to lingering provincial bigotry — but this deserves national coverage because of the folks invited to this conferenceinclude (from their own program):

  • 1 dude, Agent Orange Boehner who, if the House turns over in Nov to the Republicans, would be 3rd in line for the presidency (behind Obama & Biden) plus
  • another dude who's the putative head of the Republican Party, HNIC RNC Chairman and pioneer of race traitoring Michael Steele plus
  • of course, completing the Trifecta — a guy from Fox News.

If it weren't so horrible, it would be a little bit funny. Maybe they should dress up Steele and he can give all his speeches dressed in authentic antebellum costume so we can fully appreciate the GOP agenda. Somewhere, a tiny tear is coasting down MLK's cheek…even Booker T. would not be okay with this.

Here's a list of their invited speakers from their program. I wonder how many attended "A Southern Experience" and how many will condemn this dark, distorted, disturbing vision of the South.

  • Michael Steele, RNC Chairman
  • Jan Larimer, RNC Co-Chairman
  • Rep. Bobby Harrell, Speaker of the SC House of  Representatives
  • Rep. John Boehner, Republican House Minority Leader
  • Gov. Mark Sanford (Appalachian Trail, anyone? This seems like a good time for another visit…Run Mark — run!)
  • Sen. Jim DeMint (running against Alvin Greene — you remember him?)
  • Mallory Factor, FOX News Contributor
  • Rep. Joe Wilson (you'll remember him — he called the President a liar during Obama's first State of the Union)
  • Rep. Nikki Haley (Tea Party darling)
  • Sen. Mitch McConnell, Senate Republican Leader
  • Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer
  • Ambassador David Wilkins
  • Liz Cheney
  • Sen. Lindsay Graham
  • Karen Floyd, South Carolina Republican Party Chairman

I know — it's sad that Sarah Palin, Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh weren't able to make it, but it's not too late to join in the fun — I'm sure Palin will tell the NFRW's mama grizzlies:  "Don't retreat, reload." Then she'll pull on a Klan hood over that red suit, add some lipstick around the white mouth edges and take a cover photo with a gun.

Take a good hard look at these photos. The motivation and symbolism is all too clear. The Republican party officially would like to pull African-Americans back into slavery and share-cropping. The NFRW put this publicly up on Facebook! They think it's cool!!! This isn't even really a dogwhistle. It's just all blatant and what not.

Look black folk — if this isn't enough to get you to the polls this November to prevent these people from taking over our country again — I don't know what will. We must push back and hard — we have a dream today and it's an America where we don't have to dress like slaves to make Republicans feel more comfortable.

This is nothing short of a declaration of war — with you and me in the crosshairs. The GOP's slave revolt repression is in full effect with hired black stooges to boot. What are you going to do about it?

Does anyone know any Armenians dressing in period clothing and doing reenactments of what they call the Great Crime perpetrated by the Turks resulting in the deaths of one to one and on-half million Armenians?

If this is a war, then the Democratic Leadership is losing an easy fight, and their base is the victim of friendly fire. Or like giving your weapon to the enemy, and telling him to fire upon you and your battalion at will. Doesn't the party in power have the most political ammunition to fire back? And I'm not talking the old guard like Al or Jesse, I mean real fire power since the Dems have the political clout. The tea party/KKK 2.0 keeps pushing the envelope, while the Democratic Leadership keeps handing them more. GEEZ LOUISE what is it going to take for the Democratic Leadership to fight back? Burning an effigy on the White House lawn?

Those actors aren't elected officials, nor have key positions of to challenge the G.O.P. S.O.P, but the Democratic Leadership does. After voting and supporting the Democrats loyally for 20+ years, the Democratic Leadership's lack of push back keeps showing me why I became an Independent, and whether or not they'll see me in 2012. i may write in Cynthia McKinney.

I keep hoping for the Democratic Leadership sound off loud and often when garbage like this hits the fan.

I don't think I'll hold my breath on it.

Can we please pause for a moment to remember Nat Turner for his courage and resolution to demand respect from those who would deny his humanity.

I've been told that South Carolina has several a Rent-A-Kneegrow franchise stores located there. Part of the rental fee allows the renter to require them to dress as slaves but the renter must use clothing provided by Rent-A-Kneegrow. Stonewall Jefferson Bilbo, the chains founder said that authenticity is the reason why they require renters to use their uniforms.

I remember reading that Harriett Tubman had to aim a gun at some slaves who wanted to return to the plantation. She had to do this to avoid endangering those who wanted freedom. That man and woman shown ....may be their descendants. Where does a black soul go to rest....apparently not in America--especially now.

Please someone educate me as I just don't understand. Mr. Hanson is trying to justify these jigabos dressing up in slave regalia in order to educate these white folks about the Gullah culture. Did the Gullah culture end in 1875 and is this the way the proud people of those islands dress today. Mr. Hanson since your defending their "performance" please educate me.

Not a shock, the only thing they were missing was that fat white drag queen in black face playing a mammy role. Or that quack Dr Laura saying this is just good clean wholesome fun and since they had those black fools there, its OK.

This what whites are longing for a return to the good old days where the darkies knew their place and why they vote GOP, they know it plays well with the base and they know there will be little to no outrage and if it is, they will put out a lame "apology."

has this had any outrage, from anyone????

Sharon Cooper-Murray
Here is what Sharon Murray, the Gullah re-enactor, says on her Facebook page (and by the way, the only person in the above list who attended was Gov. Sanford to give a courtesy award to the NFRW president).

I, Sharon Cooper-Murray am a native of South Carolina raised in Florence County. After attending college I returned to South Carolina and have resided in Charleston since that time. When I arrived on Wadmalaw Island, SC it was the first time I heard the Gullah language, I was fascinated by the tone and rhythm of this Creole language and that was the beginning of what has become my life long passion: the Gullah culture their stories, music, crafts, food ways, religious folkways … their way of life.
I have served as an advocate to preserve, conserve and develop the heritage of this indigenous population, one of the activities I extensively researched has been their stories. During several oral history projects conducted on Johns and Wadmalaw Island I had the opportunity to hear first-hand their stories and tales and was also introduced to the crafts from a group of people ranging in age from 78-96 years old. Their stories were the catalyst that propelled me into storytelling. The crafts they made during my visits to their homes included rag quilting, twiss up dolls and many other crafts. The interaction of children and their elders was an essential part of passing skills from one generation to the next and that's how I learned these amazing crafts. Since that time I have been telling tales and teaching the crafts in a variety of forums including schools, churches, conferences, family reunions, festivals, craft shows and the list goes on. I have traveled extensively throughout the East coast of the United States passing on the crafts and telling the tales of the Gullah people.

The most sad thing about this is are the black people grinning away. I guess it feels wonderful to sell out your entire race and your ancestors.

I haven't even read this as I am just trying to catch up. Words fail to describe my disgust at this. It's one thing to be a re-enactor at Williamsburg or down at the Constitution center here in Philadelphia trying to tell our story. It's totally another to "jig" at a political gathering for the benefit of people who hate you.

What I'd like to know is who are the two Uncle Ruckuses that allowed themselves to be photographed wearing slave clothes?

Ain't that much money in America to make me degrade myself like that.
